Tent Camping At Our Snowdonia Campsite

Tent camping at Graig Wen

Camping North Wales

Tent campers looking for a nearly wild North Wales camping experience with camp fires in Snowdonia can pitch on our lower camping fields. It’s simple, back to nature style camping with hot showers and compost loos – as well as the chance to order breakfast pastries and dip into the honesty ice-cream freezer! Set up a campfire in a stone fire pit, tell stories, and relax for an amazing Welsh camping holiday.

The tent camping fields are open from 1st May – late September. Check in from 1pm. Last check in 7pm.

Back to Nature Camping

Pitches on our Snowdonia camp site by the Mawddach Trail are well spread out in sheltered glades, secret meadows or high on a bluff overlooking the estuary. The tent fields are for tent campers looking for a quiet, back to nature experience with camp fires. For most pitches there is no vehicle access and cars stay in the car park.

The 40 acres of meadows and wild woods are crossed by streams and dry stone walls. With a maximum of 17 tents permitted there’s plenty of breathing space. You are surrounded by unspoilt scenery and wildlife, with owls, woodpeckers  and goldfinches as your neighbours. Pitches are all grass and spacious.

Off Grid Camping

There are no electric hook ups for tents but you can access charging point for phones and wifi.  Facilities are simple but very clean, with compost loos, hot showers and drinking water taps from our borehole. There is a socket for hair drying in the showers on the camper van area of the site.

Outstanding North Wales Camping Location

Our camp site in North Wales has been featured in Cool Camping’s “50 Best Camp Sites on the Wilder Side” rankings for many years. Go North Wales’ named us the “Best Camping, Glamping, and Caravan site” on 2 occasions.

Tent Calendar

“If Carlsberg did campsites… We chose to camp in the Estuary field where no cars are allowed and you’ve got truly great views across the Mawddach Estuary, spacious pitches each with a campfire spot and dark skies with stars that will leave you gawping. What a place to be! Got to be one of, if not, THE best spot we’ve pitched at.”

Pick your Pitch Area

You can choose to book different areas for tent camping.

  • One tent per pitch only. Our car park only has enough space for one car per pitch.
  • We allocate pitches in advance, but if you have a favourite pitch please let us know and we will allocate it to you if it is available.
  •  At quieter times you may be able to choose your own pitch when you are here if you check in with us.

Choose from:

  • 3 “Park & Pitch” pitches – You can drive one car to these pitches and leave it parked there. Strictly one tent/car per pitch. Ideal for Roof Tents or car campers. Views down the valley, across to the mountains and plenty of space. If you have an especially large tent check please check dimensions with us before booking. Compost loo and hot showers within about 200 metres.
  • 5 Orchard Field pitches – Car free area so you cannot drive to pitch. Well spaced out, flat pitches ideal for larger tents. The orchard field is spacious and feels open with views of our hidden valley and Welsh apple trees. Great for families with larger tents and those with younger children – although outside peak times you might well have this area to yourself. Compost loo and hot showers within about 200 metres.
  • 6 Estuary Field tent pitches – Car free area so you cannot drive to pitch. The Estuary field pitches have some of the best views of the Mawddach Estuary with nearest access to the Mawddach Trail.  Best suited to smaller tents and adults or families with older children. Pitches are a little closer together here, so sorry no gazebos or event shelters on Estuary Field. Compost loo and hot showers within about 150 metres. Car park about 300 metres.
  • 3 Super-Secluded pitches  – Car free area so you cannot drive to pitch. These pitches are the longest walk from the car park – 350 – 450 metres – but the most private.   All our pitches have plenty of space between tents but these pitches are hidden away and you will see far less of your fellow campers. Your views will be trees and the meadow rather than mountain scenery. Best suited to adults or families with older children due to the walking involved to the car park. Compost loo and hot shower within about 50 metres.

Car-free Snowdonia Camping & Access Information

Please read about our car-free camping experience and access – it creates a tranquil environment and adds to the fun for some but doesn’t suit everyone! Please factor this into your choice or pitch – you may need to be prepared to wheelbarrow across meadows.

Car-free Camping Access

Car-free Snowdonia Camping & Access Information

Fields are kept strictly car-free to provide a great camping experience for grown-ups, with a spirit of adventure and families with older children. We have lots of space for tent camping, but have chosen to limit the number of pitches and car access areas to help protect the tranquil environment of the campsite.

We have a few “pitch and park” pitches where you can book to park by your pitch.  All other cars must remain in the camper’s car park (sorry there is no access at all for for vans as the track is too steep).

Life Service in off road Gator

You cannot drive to a pitch to drop off your kit so wheelbarrows are provided to help you. We try to offer a lift service between 2pm and 4pm in special circumstances, such as campers with lots of kit (NOT AVAILABLE Thursdays or Sundays). Outside these times, please be prepared to wheelbarrow your kit to your pitch. Our fields are a bit up and down and your pitch may be several hundred metres from the car park so you’ll need to factor this into your adventure plans!

Lift on Service for check ins – 2- 4pm Everyday EXCEPT Thursday and Sunday*

Lift Off Service 9 – 10am daily for check outs*

*Please note we do not guarantee this service and you should message ahead to check available

No van access

Vehicle access is via a steep track, making the lower fields unsuitable for vans of any kind. Our touring site is much more suitable for owners of vans. Please understand there is no access or parking area for vans, unless you book a camper van pitch. Sorry but tents and camper van campers cannot pitch together due to the terrain.

There is a different area of the site for camper vans which remains open until early January.

This was the 5th time we’ve been and it won’t be the last!!! Every time I go I can’t believe campsites like this exist, it’s a wild camping feel but with really clean toilets and a hot shower! Great for kids too! Stunning location! Great base to explore Snowdonia. Planning next years trip already 🙂

Peter, Summer 2024

Probably one of the best campsites I’ve ever been to. You get the sense of wilderness and you are not on top of each other as everyone has quite a lot of space to not feel “claustrophobic”. Very nice hosts, clean facilities, close to nice walks. I will definitely come back
